Almeria Airport provides special services to the disabled

From the time the EU law has came into effect during the month of July, 2008 concerning about the accessibility for the disabled people, almost over 27,000 people who are disabled have used the Almeria airport.

A total of 76% of the disabled travelers at the airport were women with an average age of 69 and 7 out of 10 people were Spanish. It is recommended for the disabled passengers to ask for the special services 48 hours before they travel and when purchasing the ticket.

Almeria

Almeria is a city in Spain. It is the capital of the province of Almeria. The name Almeria means Mirror in Arabic and it was named like this from the caliph Abd ar-Rachman III of Cordova in 955. The caliph wanted to make his defenses in the area stronger, that’s why you’ll see the huge fortress of Alcazaba and the walls Jayran. The Alcazaba could hold, it is said, an army of 20000 men. From this place you will get a nice view of the cave Barrio de la Chanca and the impressive Cathedral. The Crystal Cave was discovered only recently in 2000 by geologists, in an old silver mine that is now closed. The Crystal Cave has huge gypsum crystals. The entrance was closed by tons of stone. The entrance still remains closed not the rocks but by the police, as tourists can not yet access the cave.

The Cathedral, which looks like a fortress with its towers, hidden paths built to defend it from the pirates of the Mediterranean Sea. At first it was built as a mosque and it was converted into a church when the Spanish claimed the land. The cathedral was destroyed by an earthquake in 1522 and it was rebuilt in a Renaissance style.

Almeria’s economy is based on agriculture and exporting goods, fruits and vegetables. During the 20th century Almeria grew very much and fast, having tourists visiting and because of agriculture. Many greenhouses were put and exports of vegetables increased rapidly.

The Almeria Airport.

Located on the Mediterranean Sea in southeastern Spain is Almeria, which is also the capital of the province of Almeria.

The name has its roots in Arabic which means the mirror hence “The mirror of the sea”.

The city’s old quarter has a 16th century Cathedral with its six gothic towers, originally built as a fortress to withstand pirate attacks. It contains artworks of great value.

Almeria has troglodyte villages with houses carved out of soft rock, buried in the hillside.

Almeria has three museums which outline the history of the region from the earliest times to date with exhibits from the Iberian to the Roman age.

Thirteen kilometers west from Almeria along the coast is the tourist center of Aguadulce. It has many hotels, a Yacht harbor, and lots of water sports. A little further is the fishing village of Roquetas de Mar which is also a popular resort with a busy harbor and a golf course.

East of Almeria is the resort of Mojacar, with busy beaches in summer surrounded by a hilltop.

Almeria has a desert town with Wild West theme parks where movies like Fistful of dollars, Good the bad and the ugly, and some scenes from Lawrence of Arabia were shot.

Almeria has a laid back night life and may not appeal to someone wanting action, but with its many tapas bars and restaurants offering regional cuisine, Almeria can be a culinary experience.
