Almeria
Almeria is a city in Spain. It is the capital of the province of Almeria. The name Almeria means Mirror in Arabic and it was named like this from the caliph Abd ar-Rachman III of Cordova in 955. The caliph wanted to make his defenses in the area stronger, that’s why you’ll see the huge fortress of Alcazaba and the walls Jayran. The Alcazaba could hold, it is said, an army of 20000 men. From this place you will get a nice view of the cave Barrio de la Chanca and the impressive Cathedral. The Crystal Cave was discovered only recently in 2000 by geologists, in an old silver mine that is now closed. The Crystal Cave has huge gypsum crystals. The entrance was closed by tons of stone. The Cathedral, which looks like a fortress with its towers, hidden paths built to defend it from the pirates of the Mediterranean Sea. At first it was built as a mosque and it was converted into a church when the Spanish claimed the land. The cathedral was destroyed by an earthquake in 1522 and it was rebuilt in a Renaissance style.
Almeria’s economy is based on agriculture and exporting goods, fruits and vegetables. During the 20th century Almeria grew very much and fast, having tourists visiting and because of agriculture. Many greenhouses were put and exports of vegetables increased rapidly.
